Thanks for all the input. I've got the books on order.
Checked over the car and its in good shape with just a bit of surface rust.
The wiring harness looks tattered and rather then screw something up by
trying to start the engine.  I thought I'd do a garage rebuild; boil the
block, new std rings, bearings, valve - guides.springs.grind, new gaskets
and paint.  

Is this dumb?
The engine had 56K on it and was well maintained and it turns over stiffly
by hand.
Does disassembling one of these engines open yourself to more problems i.e.
broken head studs and rusted together stuff that breaks when you remove it.

Same Idea on the tranny.??   My main objective is to have a fresh none
leakier in both cases.
