If you have the Moss bypass fitting, using it is lots easier than
modifying the plate on the head. Some say that the modified-plate
arrangement works better, but I have been satisfied with the bypass
fitting arrangement. TranSport Motors, Richmond VA, installed the Arnolt
heater in 1954. $50 for heater, tax and installation.
The bypass pipe that has the two right-angle pipes coming from it has
a blocking plate soldered inside, between the two right-angle pipes.
There is a 1/8" hole in that blocking plate.
Some years ago there was an article in TSO about heaters and their
plumbing. I forget when it was published, but it would be old enough to
be on the DVD.
