Glenn,

        You are correct.  That is for the automatic transmission.
Oldsmobile did several strange things with that setup.  Attached to the
"flywheel" you have was a spring-center disc (like a clutch disc with no
friction facings) which in turn drove the transmission through a splined
input shaft like on most manual transmissions.  The very small torque
converter was inside the main transmission case, out of sight.  The
"flywheel" was needed because the torque converter did not have enough mass
to do the job.

        You need a regular flywheel in order to use a manual transmission.
You do not need a custom lightened one-a stock one will do.  I have an
extra one I could sell you at a reasonable price.  Others on the list may
have also.  Dan LaGrou, of D & D Fabrications, in Almont, Michigan,
810/798-2491, no website, has new ones for $210.00.  He is also an
excellent source for information and seems to always be willing to talk to
you about your needs.
