I recently replaced the front transmission seal on a Saginaw 4-speed that I
use behind one of my Buick 215's. The seal is pressed into the back side of
the bearing retainer.

Kevin,

A strange question perhaps, but is there actually a front seal on
this transmission? Volvo 4-speeds, all American 3-speeds, and all
British-made Morris Minor 4-speeds I have ever disassembled, are without
front seals as such. I have never worked with any American 4- or 5-speeds
so do not know what they have. These others just rely on a close fit of
the front bearing retainer around the shaft, as well as a partial shield on
the inside face of the front bearing to control oil. Some also have a
spiral groove cut into the main drive gear shaft which is supposed to
"spiral" oil back into the transmission, through a return hole, due to
shaft rotation.

Can't help with the jamup problem you describe. Surely somebody
else will be able to. Torque specs are also unknown to me but I suspect
are not crucial. I certainly hope you have not actually dropped any needle
bearings. In my experience, this usually involves quite a bit of extra
work.

Will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Cheers,

Dave K.
