This may have been a topic beaten to death before I joined the list two
years ago. Forgive me if it was. Anybody ever built an engine w/roller
lifters? I'm looking at this from two angles:
1) Roller lifters w/regular cam: My thought being to simply reduce friction
and extend valvetrain life. Can it be done? It shouldn't require special
springs, since the cam is still "normal". I'd need adjustable pushrods or
rockers (or both) for solid roller lifters. Even though I know of no
specific lifters made for the B.O.P.R aluminum V-8, I believe the lifter
spacing is the same for all small-block Buicks, and v-6 Buicks, and I know
people use aftermarket roller lifters in the Buick V-6, both solid and
hydraulic. I seem to recall reading in a few places that Rovers can wear
out their cams sooner than other manufacturers. Then again, if this were
true, would that just be due to Rover not hardening the lobes deep enough?
Perhaps Crower and others are better (more wear resistant)?
2) Roller lifters w/ roller cam: Help breathing by getting valve open
sooner, despite keeping same max. lift. Crower lists a roller cam made for
their 215/300/340 Buick family, but it's custom ground to your settings.
This would lead me to believe it's possible and that the lifters exist too,
even though they are not called out explicitly in the catalog. Has anyone
here ever developed such a profile? If so what other mods did you have to
make?
