We decided to keep the look as original as possible, which meant keeping
the 1 1/2 inch carbs and Magnette air cleaner, which meant a practical
limit of about 1900 cc for the 5-main engine. Regarding transmission room,
I did not have enough to fit the MGB all-synch overdrive, and the ZX
5-speed is actually smaller and stronger than the original 4-speed.
(Better be, the ZX six cylinder puts out 140 to 160 bhp depending on state
of tune.)

As for the Magnette Man-U-Matics, I've never seen one and in my reading of
various historical articles on MG Z Magnettes I seem to remember that
although the option was offered, no one took MG up on it. Maybe this would
be a good question for NTG (the MG specialists in Ipswich GB).
