I've been there before on both the TD and the J2. Here's my 2 cents worth=
:

Remove the tank and dump out what loose gunk will come out. If the tank i=
s badly rusted (more than just surface rust), have it boiled out. There a=
re any number of good gas tank repair places. Check the yellow pages unde=
r "Tanks - Repair". We have a chain here in Minnesota DBA "Tank Re-Nu".=20

If only surface rust and dirt, flush the tank out with lots of clean wate=
r or a mild solvent. Ball bearings or aquarium stones work well to aid in=
removing rust and scale. Shake everything around a few times and keep fl=
ushing. Let air dry for a day or two.

Then add a quart of tank sealant and slosh around to coat as much of the =
surface as possible. This is available from several sources. Moss stocks =
it. an fellow by the name of Bill Hirsch advertises in several places, or=
you can go to a well equipped aircraft supply house. They use it in lini=
ng fuel tanks.

Make sure you get the stuff that is impervious to alcohol. Also be carefu=
l not to plug up filter screens and vent holes in the tank. You wont have=
much problem on a TD tank as long as you remove the fuel gauge sending u=
nit and the bottom drain plug before you start the process. When you repl=
ace the sending unit, be sure to use a fuel safe sealant. I've seen lots =
of tanks leak badly at this joint.

Good luck.

I also have a 53 TD that has rust in the gas tank (even though it was sto=
red
in a heated garage for the last 25 years). I'm concerned that the rust mi=
ght
be harmful to the engine, assuming it can get through the filter. Is ther=
e
some rust in all gas tank? Please let me know what you find out.
