I asked a similar question to the owner of a very good front end shop.
Basically I wanted to know where I could borrow or rent the appropriate
tool. To my surprise he told me to buy a 3 pound sledge hammer, remove the
retaining nut, and take a good hard swing at the rounded end of the steering
arm where the ball joint fits in. Bingo, the tapered pin pops out. The key
to the procedure is to get a good swing and a solid hit, but it works each
time. Simple, clean and cheap plus you can use the sledge on other obtuse
parts. Good Luck.
