It looks as if the timing didn't hold.
My guess is that there are three possible explanations for this phenomenon:

a) Your dad filed (the tungsten coating) off the (old) CB  points before
setting the 
     timing (instead of using a new set). 
    After removing this coating the CB points burn in rather heavily.
    [highly unlikely that he did this].

b) The capacitor across the CB points is of the wrong type, or defective,
causing the 
     CB points to burn rapidly.

c) A DPO replaced the standard coil with a so-called "Sports"coil or Heavy Duty
    coil, requiring more Amps through the points, thus upsetting the system, 
     to the same effect.
