As someone mentioned earlier, a simple turn of the speedo from behind the
fascia will release it. Remember to rotate the trim ring and glass off first,
though, before trying to pull it through.

Common problem with speedos on B's:  They have a little right-angle drive
gear mounted to the side of the transmission case.  The gear isn't especially
sturdy and perishes with time.  It's located, on US models, on the passenger
side of the tranny, just behind the mounting bolts.  Try removing this and
seeing if the gear has been stripped; if this happens, your cable will be
fine, but your speedo will not work.  Replacement cost is something like
US$12 or so, and takes maybe fifteen minutes.  Well worth looking at before
you try to replace the speedo itself.
