That sort of nails it for me. Definitely not a fuel problem.  Kevin is right
... until you put the clutch in, momentum  & the drivetrain will still carry
the crank around; thus your grinding starter & no alt. light.  

If you're going to try the 'swap parts until it goes away' approach, start
with the coil ... I think that's the cheapest thing in that series and
probably the most basic. Coils don't go bad very often, but when they do
they're the devil to figure out.  I'd also take a long hard look at your
brainbox, since it's an elec ignition system you've got.  Since you've
checked the connexions already, that would seem to rule out faulty wiring,
but check the ground on the coil again just in case.  And while you're under
there, use a multimeter and check the output from your alternator ... make
sure it's constant.  Seems to me I recall reading that if your voltage
regulator goes bad, and the alternator starts putting out random shots of
20-25V or so, it can mess your electronic ignition up and cause symptoms like
the ones you've got.
