Ed,
A little less than 10,000 MGCs were made, so they are rarer than Bs.
Production was split about 50/50 between GT and open.
As mentioned really check for rust as entire front suspension and
mounting structures are different from Bs and they sure aren't going to
make any more shells! Front suspension, brakes, wheels and engine share
nothing in common with Bs. Some parts are same as Triumph GT6, etc. so
they are available but usually more expensive than B. BritVic sells MGC
parts so if you have their MGB catalog you can get an idea of part prices.
Many other sources of parts are in MGC owner club newsletter. 69 seats are
exclusive to 69 so if they are not in good shape you may need to redo
completely at a little more expense than other years.
MGCs are tough cars. The extra engine smoothness and torque make it a
great tourer. My wife and I did a rally in our C and it was the first time
she ever drove the car. Because of a week reverse lockout spring she had a
hard time downshifting to 2nd gear without also getting R. I said dont
worry and we did the whole rally in mostly 3rd and 4th gear. When we got
to the finish a friend in a B said they never got above 3rd.
Acceleration isnt much better than a B, top end is a whole lot better!
I really dont think understeer is that bad. Routine driving is much
easier and more comfortable than Bs I've had. A MGC/GT would be a superb
car for trips or most routing driving.
If the body is in very good shape, especiall rust wise, and the engine
is free and all parts are there, then everything else can be fixed easily.
I would think a MGC in comparable shape may be worth 1-2 K more than a B.
It may be a better investment in the future as your talking a production of
10K vs 500K Bs. Only time will tell.
