Is a Metro, Montego, Maestro an MG? I would have to say yes, it has
an MG badge and it has historical reasoning to back it up. MG
historians are quick to point out that "Old Number One" wasn't really
No.1. It was just the first MG sports car. MG made MGs in 1923, a
large luxury sedan with a bit more power than usual. It was based on
a Morris chassis, with Morris running gear. Later, MG made more
sedan, mostly based on Morris cars. The MG ZA ZB Magnette was also a
Wolseley. The MG Magnette Mk III and IV were Austin Cambridge/Morris
Oxfords. The MG 1100/1300 is known to us in the states as an Austin
AMerica, and to you as the Austin Morris Riley Wolseley 1100/1300.
All of these cars are generally accepted as MGs, especailly the early
sedans. It is no surprise that MG Metro owners consider thier MGs to
be MGs. The Metro followed the same formula as the first MG. It was
another company's car, but with better trim and performance. The MG
Owner's Club and MG Car Club both consider the Metro to be an MG. I
think we should too, it save dthe nameplate for a good number of
years.
