I would suspect either the ignition switch, the battery(ies), or the
battery connections.  If the starter kept cranking when everything died,
then suspect the switch.  If the starter died along with everything else,
then the battery(ies) or connections.  A high resistance connection to a
battery terminal or between the battery and ground could be responsible. 
Borrow Phil's spoon, and bang on the battery terminal and switch.  It
won't help, but it will make you feel better. 

Then try the cheapest thing--remove and clean all battery connections and 
see if that doesn't help.
