When to dip your dipstick?

MG list:

Should the oil level be checked immediately after
stopping the engine or after all the oil has drained
to the sump? Anyone have a definitive answer?

>From the '68 MGB owner's manual:

"Maintain the oil level at the 'MAX' mark on
the dipstick and never allow it to fall below the
'MIN' mark."

No advice on the conditions to use when checking the
oil level other than:

"The oil level should always be checked before a long run."

As measured on my '68 MGB:

Immediately after 20 minute drive from work:

oil line midway between 'MIN' and 'MAX' mark

Next morning, after setting all night:

oil line 1/4" above 'MAX' mark

Both cases are on a level driveway with the engine off.

I don't wish to start another religious discussion in this
group, but I have always been curious about this point.
