Marc,
your exhaust pipes should be bolt securley to the header off the manifold.
as a matter of fact I believe ther is a metal gasket (for want of a better
term) that belongs there to help make a tight fit. you should not have any
exhaust comming into the car while ideling, unless it is from a smog burner
in front of you! I rudementary test to determine if you have leaks in your
exahust is to place your hand over the tail pipe, with the car running. If
the car dies your system is probably tight enough for most any situation.
if it doesn't die the exhaust has another outlet and things should be
tighhtened up! Good luck
