This may be too simple, but are you sure that the battery is in the right
way?  My uncle, unfamiliar with LBC's, hooked the battery up negative
ground and got exactly that symptom.  He would drive it a period of time
and it killed the battery.

He also, before a trip to Florida, changed the oil by draining the
transmission and adding five quarts to the engine.  Needless to say, he
never made his destination.  He fixed the problem by selling the MG and
buying a Mustang.

All this happend 30 years ago.  That MGA was my first exposure to LBC's. 
By buying the A this fall, I have kind of gone full circle in my LBC
existance (not to get too new age).  You can bet that the first thing that
I did after I got home was to change the oil in the engine AND transmision,
just to be on the safe side.
