My son & I just recovered the dash on his 80 MGB.
We made the metal reasonably clean but far from completely. The first time
we put it on we used contact cement. But we ended up with the cover about
1/16 off which made a difference in lining up the instrument holes.
After taking our time & peeling it off (approx 1 hour) we reinstalled it
with silicone adhesive pnly on the front part of the metal dash. (Silicone
is what they gave me when I pput the dash top cover on our other MG & it
has held sor several years in the FL sun.) With the siliconeadhesive we
had time to move it around cut out one instrument hole at a time - install
the instrument to hold it place, then cut out the next hole, put the next
one in place, etc.... This proceedure allowed us to put the cover exacly
where we wanted it & then let the silicone set over night.
We then used contact cement only on the top & bottem portions of the
cover. It has only been a month since we did it but it seems to hold well.
