Having just got to this ...

The Leyland Workshop Manual quotes compression figures at a cranking speed of 
275 rpm.  I don't know know how this equates to speeds with plugs in and plugs 
out, but I do know that the one is a lot higher than the other, and wouldn't 
this affect the reading?  My gauge instructions say plugs in.
