Jim,
        If you know enough about the origins of your particular engine, you 
can probably piece together all of the information on the engine 
plate except for the actual sequential part of the serial number.
        What year car did the engine come out of?  Did that car have 
overdrive? Etc, Etc.
        The parts are not interchangeable throughout all years, but if you 
can narrow it down to a five-main or three-main block, that's half 
the battle.
