Probably just a coincidence and not related to the added weight at all. 
Check for fuel delivery at the carb first.  Just a trickle, look for a
clog in the line.  No flow at all,look for an electrical problem.

However, if it was to have anything to do with the weight, check for a
frayed and/or shorted wire where the wiring harness passes close by the
right side leaf spring.  There is the remote possibility that the power
feed to the fuel pump has gotten frazzled at that point.
