Battery Venting

Went to Sears today to buy a battery for my '70 GT.  The salesman
looked it up in the book and said I needed a Diehard International - a
battery that allows you to attach a tube to permit the battery to vent to
the exterior of the car.  Anyone venting their battery(ies) to the exterior
of the car?  I realize the battery hangs underneath and outside of the
car, but if I install the battery in a battery box, should I allow for venting?
