     I think it is a good idea to remove the brass plugs before hot tanking
for the same reasons as have been stated by the responses of others to your
post.  However, a word of warning and caution.  Make sure you document which
openings actually had brass plugs in them before you send your block to the
machine shop.  I took my 1500 MGA engine to a machine shop with an excellent
reputation.  However, they do very few MGA engines ( I am guessing about one a
decade).  When I got the engine back, I was concerned that one hole that
should have been plugged was not and one that was plugged should not have
been.  I had not documented the pre-machine shop state, so after much research
and an email to John Twist, I got it sorted out and sure enough, one plug was
wrong.  Fortunately, I had found the situation before I put the engine in the
car....
