There is no doubt that the car itself is music to the ear - but a man
gotta have tunes!!
I have radio/cd setups in two of my cars, one is sony, the other is
panasonic. the key is look for the shortest unit you can find - its not
so much of a problem in your car as it is in the earlier ones since the
centre console is raked and gives you about an extra inch. since models
change almost weekly, check at a local place and see what is shortest -
also, most manufacturers produce spacer fronts theat will set the thing
out another 3/4-1" - i have that in the 69 and there was no problem
installing it. On the GT i ended up reducting the defroster tubes through
the sides of the heater box to get enough depth -
I dont believe in cutting door panels personally though that is the
logical spot for speakers - and it is fairly easy to run wires through
the kick panel sections and the door hinges. For the GT i mounted them in
the panels behind the seats - there is enough room for a fair size
speaker in the top cutout though you will have to scallop and re-cover
the railcaps to accommodate the covers - also not too difficult and makes
it look like it was designed that way! you can then run the wires under
the carpet and into the box section - much neater.
The last one i bought was about $300 including the speakers which were as
high performance (read expensive) as i could get since they are only
3.5-4" in diameter.

69 roadster (sony with The Who on deck)
70 BGT( panasonic - Ozzy at last count!)
72 roadster (nothing - just cant cut those NOS panels!!!!)
