Do you have a variable power supply unit (a mains adaptor with a variable
output)?
1-Yes
Just unconnect (or deconnect...which one is right?) the wires to the gauge,
and connect the p.s.u. to the gauge (possibly + with + and - with -). The
gauge should read full with a 10V input, and decrease with less input
voltage.
2-No
Ah Ah...what's the problem...the gauge reads always full or empty? if
always empty, try to connect whichever 12V to the gauge and see if it
works; if always full, just unconnecting the wires should bring it down to
Empty.

Wanna check the sender? In this case you should have (own, borrow, rent,
steal) a voltmeter, and check its output at different fuel levels (assuming
you don't want to remove it from the car).

I think that a common problem in MG gauges is the instrument voltage
stabilizer not working properly (or at all!). My car failed in this because
the stabilizer (that is an electro-mechanical device) orientation was
wrong. I don't remember what's correct (perhaps it should be vertical), but
do remember that when I put it right, the fuel gauge started eventually to
indicate properly. If the stabilizer is broken, then you can buy a
replacement unit or make someone to build a completely electronic
replacement.
