Can't help you really by comparing, as my B has the older style  temp gauge
with capillary tube - not  an electrical one.

But, when reading this story, it seems like an electrical problem to me.
Probably a faulty earth return from the sender unit?
Do I understand correctly that you install the sender unit into the thermostat
housing cap? Does it really belong there? Seems like the gasket acts as an
insulator.
