Jon,
there is rust and then theres RUST- if the wheels are heavily corroded
they may actually be dangerous to use, a hard corner and you hear "pin
ping ping crunch"
which is the sound of spokes breaking!. If its just surface rust then
they can be sandblasted and either painted or powdercoated- which is more
expensive but a superior finish. for all the above they must be a)off the
car, b)without tyres c) with all spokes in place (including replacement
of broken bent or otherwise distorted ones and d)checked and trued (so
they are perfectly round and for that matter parallel at the rims) - i
would suggest you take them with you to the "MG specialisten" who will
likely be able to give you advice, alternatively perhaps a motorcycle
dealer would have some ideas on balancing, truing etc.
I know the type of tyres you mention - studded, but again if they are
very old, check them very carefully - you will need inner tubes for the
wires anyway but if the rubber is perished or dry you may lose the tread
when you least expect it!
New wires are expensive - here in the U.S. there are companies that
rebuild old wheels at a fraction of the cost but i wouldnt know what is
available in Norway
Good Luck
