Story.......
            Ford UK sold a model called the Cortina, that when you took
the carb off on some models, it was possible for the little spring that
held in the crude acceleration pump, to eject the ball bearing that was
the 'piston', into the inlet manifold. This excellent idea ensured Ford
sold a lot of reconditioned engines; 1) because they had awful
acceleration after the loss of the ball, and 2) the quite pretty
pebble-dashed piston, valves, and head, ensured loss of compression,
broken bits of valve, and eventually a siezed piston, wrecked it all!!!

If you lose a bit, ALWAYS find it, inside the engine leads to DISASTER.
