There are probably a bunch of ways, but the way you plan is probably the
easiest.
 A couple of caveats though,
 1. Support the axle with a jack
 2. Remove the axle rebound straps
 3. Disconnect the shock absorber and the axle/spring plate by removing
the U bolts (they've gotta come off any way)
 4. Disconnect the hard brake line where it connects to the flexible
line, top of the axle on the right side. Plug this line to reduce loss of
brake fluid.
 5. Disconnect the hand brake cable at it's connection to the bellcrank.
 6. Leave the wheels/tire on (or replace them.) if the car is high
enough to clear the wheels
 7. Now you can release the rear spring hangers lower them to the ground
and roll the axle out the back of the car on the wheels. Alternativley,
if the car is not high enough to clear the wheels, lower the axle (sans
tires) on your floor jack and with a friend balancing it , carefully pull
it out the rear.
 "Piece of cake"
