Thanks to everyone for the helpful advice.

I did move the wire to the other prong at the tank and the gauge read full.
Fortunately the PO gave me a box of parts which did include a new sending
unit.  The box also included a king pin kit and new front and rear brake
pads.

As for the tach and temp. gauge working erratically, that problem has
disappeared...for now.  I'll start by cleaning all my contacts and checking
the voltage at the voltage regulator.

Tomorrow will be a sad day as I will be putting the GT away for the winter
:(  I will be removing the seats and reupholster them in their original
ochre over the winter.  I may just sit one in the living room over the
winter and use it as a chair.
