I'm gonna feel guilty about using up a bunch of non-lbc bandwidth, but I just
can't sit back on this one. The 1987 Camry that I bought new in 1987 was, until
my 1992 Taurus wagon, undoubtedly the best car I'd ever owned. I put about
100,000 miles on it in the three years that I owned it. It was delivered with
only three minor flaws, e.g., a piece of trim that wasn't attached properly. It
routinely gave me 33-35mpg for my daily 85 mile commute thru Boston. On a trip
I was able to nudge 40mpg. It developed two faults, the first was a failure of
the coolant sensor for the F/I. The code for the problem was in the shop manual
that I owned. Replaced in warranty. The other was a failure in the
transmission that would cause it to jump out of fifth gear. This occurred at
about 40,000 miles. The warranty had expired at 36,000. Toyota agreed to
replace all faulty or damaged components in the transmission, I paid for the
labor. I replaced the original tires at about 75,000 miles. (I routinely get
excellent tire/brake/clutch mileage.)
I traded it in on a new '90 Camry that was totally trouble free until the
Japanese Trade Minister decided to bad mouth America. I traded it for a '92
Taurus Wagon with the 3.8 engine. It was delivered free of any faults and has
been outstanding for reliability. It now has 94,000 trouble free miles. The
only time it required a call to AAA was when my wife locked the doors with the
engine still running. (Yes, it's that quiet.)
