Andy:

The original mirror base plate is plastic and has two pegs which
push through the sheetmetal. When the mirror self tapping screws tighten in
these they expand kinda like a rivet to hold the assembly tight to the door.
When the mirror is taken off the base stays on the body as these pegs do not
shrink back to original size. The pegs tend to break if you try to pry the
base plates off the sheet metal. Luckily the plates are available new, so
the mirrors can be mounted again if the door holes have not been buggered
up. DPO's tend not to know this and reuse the original pads with all kinds
of creative hardware available from ACME tool and die.

Kelvin.
