You're right about high-octane fuel not giving more power under
normal circumstances.  However, since higher octane fuel resists
pinging, the timing can be advanced to gain additional power.  Of
course, you can only adjust the timing as far forward as the extra
octane will let you.  And on newer cars with computers and sensors,
you might as well forget all of the above and run the octane level
that the manufacturer suggests.
