I cannot say for certain that this is correct, but I always remove the axle
and springs as a unit.  I also remove the wheels before removing the unit on
the jack because the car does not have to be elevated as much.  My jackstands
are not too tall.  I find it is easier to disassemble and reassemble the
components outside of the car, and to then tighten everything down once it is
back under the car and every thing is ligned up again.
