Many moons ago, 1980 as I recall, we were moving from Casper, WY to
Greeley, CO. About 240 miles. I was driving my Dad's 79 Pontiac Grand
Prix, pulling a U-Haul, and Janet (the SU) was driving our 76 Midget.
About an hour down the road I notice she isn't behind me anymore. Of
coourse I change lanes first to make sure she isn't tucked up behind the
trailer. I pull over and stop. I wait about 5 min and am about to flip
over to the other lane to go back when over the hill in the distance I
spy the Midget coming down the raod, flashers going, in the parking lane,
about 10 mph. I sit and wait for her to pull up and stop. The engine is
idling just a smooth as you please. She tells me that is as fast as it
will go. I figure carburettor problem.
Now fortunately, in the trailer is my toolbox. Of course it is buried in
the front of the trailer being the heaviest item in the load, but it was
there. I dig my way to it grab a few tools (like a Philips screwdriver)
and pull the dashpot off the Z-S. Shore enough a tear in the diaphragm.
What to do? We are alongside I-25 in the middle of Nowheresville, WY.
Now didn't I see a roll of electricians tape in the tool box? Crawl back
in the trailer, fetch the tape. Carefully clean the diaphragm off as best
I can, tape the tear carefully on both sides and reassemble the Z-S.
Cross fingers, turn key, Ignition!! Push accelerator, REVS!! Tell Janet
to drive in front of me so if it fails again I won't loose track of her.
About 5 hours later we get to our new home in Greeley. Cruised the whole
way about 65 mph. Drive the Midget around for several days until I can
locate a local British Parts Guy and get a carb kit.
SO forget the spare carb diaphragm always carry electrician's tape. (and
a shoestring, but that is another story)
