Well, it was the wave of the future, circa 1960. Sunbeam's Alpine was
already on the road with a unibody. MG couldn't be left behind (or so
they thought).
Of course, the advantages are all at the manufacturing end -- ease of
restoration 30-40 years later didn't enter into it.
Just be glad they didn't use wood -- you can't patch and weld dry rot...
