I have to agree with David's sentiment, but I expect the reason for the 
choice was to make the project more interesting to the volunteer labor 
that invariably is relied on in these kind of projects. They probably 
thought it would be more fun to work on a sports car than a generic 
econobox, and it's hard to argue with that logic. And think of all the 
stuff you'd have to remove from a modern sports car just to reduce weight 
and make space for the batteries, not to mention the elaborate and 
unnecessary (on an EV) emissions control equipment. Just sorting out the 
wiring harness on a Miata could be pretty scary.
