Just tell him to pretend that he's sneeking in after curfew, and needs to 
keep the wooden floorboards from creaking.  As he slowly puts one foot down, 
he slowly lifts the other up...

I wonder if it would help to put the rear axle up on jack stands (oops, 
forgot, Rabbit, front-wheel drive).  Okay, so put the front up on jack 
stands, and let him practive starting in first, shifting to second, slow 
acceleration, shift to third, accelerate, decelerate, downshift,...etc.

The reason I thought of this is when I learned on a Mazda RX-2, it was dead 
of winter and the car was on a frozen gravel drive with ice three or four 
inches thick.  With wheels spinning, my sisters boyfriend taught me how to 
drive a stick on the ice, without ever going anywhere.
