All:

When Datsuns were first brought into this country back in the 60's they all had
manual chokes vs. the automatic devices used on American cars.

A story going around the mechanics then concerned a problem a customer was
having with poor fuel economy. It seems a lady kept bringing back her car
complaining about high fuel consumption. The mechanics would check it out and
find no problems. They even hooked up a fuel flow measuring device and drove
it. After several tries, they decided that the driver must be doing something
to cause poor mileage. They queried her about driving habits without revealing
anything. So as a final resort, they decided to go riding with her. The
mechanic got into the passenger seat while the owner got into the drivers side.
She promptly pulled out the choke knob and hung her purse on it! Problem
solved.

So to make sure that all of us drivers are smart enough to release the choke,
the government decided to let some fallible device do it for us!
