That's what I am considering when I need a replacement.  In this
instance I think I will consider a US auto built in the early
60's.  You can find some really low mileage ones which will cost
about one-half of the Passat, and are very easy to maintain. 
Plus you've got all the lookers and fun.  You can get 6 passenger
sedans, or wagons, AC, and three on the tree with OD, sixes or
V8's
