The piston *centralises* in the solenoid when power is applied, so it all
depends on whether the piston is pushed in past the centre or pulled out
past it.  There is no return spring inside the solenoid, so de-energising
the coil leaves the piston where it is unless gravity overcomes friction.
In use it seems to me that oil pressure pushes the piston back to its
resting place once power is removed.
