Aubrey,
  At 70 it should be steady and secure on the road.  That's a normal road
speed for MGBs, even w/o overdrive.  The car can cruise a 70 mph for
hours on end.  You will hear engine and wind noise, but steering is
light, positive, and the car should be sticking to the pavement just
fine. 
  MG asserted in at least one advertising piece that the TD 'sticks to
the road like a limpet'.  Maybe so, though not like any limpet I've ever
seen, but the MGB really does stick.  
  If it's rattlin'&rollin', start looking at the suspension bushings, the
dampers and the tires, tire balance and alignment.
