I had a pick-up stolen last May. A nice young officer investigated, took
down some details, left me his card, and filed a report. Two months later,
a citizen called in about a truck that had not been moved for weeks parked
near his house. The police came, called it's plate in, identified it as
mine, and informed me that I could come pay the towing and storage fees and
fetch my (semi-trashed and undriveable) truck. That, as far as I can tell,
was the entire sum of police work put into the case.
Curious, I did some investigating locally and discovered that, hereabouts
at least, such thefts as mine (and burglaries as well) are routinely
ignored, aside from filing a report. Many more person-hours and dollars go
into traffic patrols, presumably because they generate revenue.

An ironical note in my case is the fact that the truck had been sitting
just around the corner from the police station.

I never park the MG out of sight.
