Could indeed be a problem, but the designations existed whether the
configurations were available or not.

A November 1957 factory listing for those numbers list these possibilities:

A= Automatic gearbox
M=Manumatic clutch (A few Magnettes escaped the factory with these
disastrous contraptions.)
N=Steering column mount gear change gearbox
O=Overdrive (B-G type)
P=Police specification (The Bobbies had a special box?)
U=Centre change gearbox

Maybe Larry knows more about this.
