By the tales of some owners they are the most unreliable cars on this or any
other planet. I have a roadster I have had for 12 years and done 25k in,
including 2500 miles round Britain in five days and a similar distance round
France in two weeks as well as many journeys shorter both in time and
distance. I also have had a factory V8 for 7 years and 65k miles, and for
six of those years it was my daily driver doing up to 150 miles per day and
I had no other car available to me. The roadster only ever stopped once on
me, it was the fuel pump which could not be got going again, I was carrying
a spare and changed it by the roadside. The V8 stopped twice in the space
of 100 yards because a flap of material was coming loose from the fan belt
and pulled off the coil wire. That is not to say I haven't spent a lot of
time and money replacing and repairing parts because I have, but that is
planned maintenance and not breakdowns. One of the best pieces of advice
I got from the MG community in the very first days of my ownership was
"Listen to your car, it is talking to you". Get to know how your car feels,
sounds, smells and looks and investigate and changes *before* they become a
breakdown. The roadster fuel pump? It had given me a warning a couple of
times previously but I ignored it.
