I know this one's a bit off the topic, but I'm hoping one of you has some
thoughts on this. My wants-to-be-an-engineer son is about at the end of his
tether. Here's a copy of the note I posted to one of the Nissan groups. I'm
hoping one of you all has some thoughts.

'74 Datsun 260Z lacks oil pressure.

My son has re-assembled the engine to his 260Z. The first time he did it, he
had oil pressure. But then he decided to remove the oil pan and replace its
gasket. Now that he's reassembled things again, he gets no oil pressure.
We're stumped and more than a little frustrated.

Here is what we know:
--The oil pump is revolving when the engine turns -- well, we assume it's
revolving because the distributor is revolving and both run off the same
gears. And we know the oil pump works, because when you have it off the car
and turn it with a screwdriver, oil shoots out.
--He has primed the pump with oil and, when he removes the pump, the oil is
still there, so we know it's not trying to pump air thru the system.
--The intake screen and intake tube in the oil pan are not damaged and are
clear of obstructions.
--The engine's integrity is good -- no cracks in the block, no missing or
damaged gaskets, etc. In other words, there is no oil leaking down the side
of the engine from a bad gasket or crack.
--Oil pan, head, valve cover, water pump, etc. gaskets are all new.
--When you blow air through the inlet for the oil pump, you can feel it come
out of the feeder tube for the oil filter so, at least in that part of the
engine, we know there are no obstructions in the internal oil passages.
--He never disassembled the oil pump, so we know it's not a question of
something being installed improperly in the pump's reassembly.

We're at a loss for ideas. We can't see anything we've overlooked to try to
get the oil flowing thru this engine.

Can anyone see anything we've overlooked or anything else we need to check?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
