Nominally 5/16" when new.  If you squeeze it a little to take up most of 
the internal spring motion, then about .300" or possibly as little as .290" 
thick when new.  Nominal 1/4" thickness is about end service of life, while 
.220" would generally be touching the rivet heads on both sides.
