Took the 72B in for a front end alignment. The 72B is using the front end
off my old 71BGT and a steering rack that I bought off of Ebay (the one
from the BGT was leaking like a sieve from the top). I knew the toe in was
off by quite a margin so I used one of those Moss Motor alignment tools,
looks like a large ruler, to get the toe in close.
The toe in was at 0.65 " and they set it to .18" (about 1/8"). Caster was
in the acceptable range (5.6, 6.9). But the camber is slightly negative,
-0.5 (degrees?) on the left and -0.2 on the right. Should be between 0.8 to
1.3. So is this a bad thing? And if so, how would I adjust the camber?
The shop is a fairly competent place, at least for American cars, and they
are right next to where I work. They noted the left front king pin had a
little play, the front springs are "sagging", and the rack "feels too
tight." I don't know if the springs sag but I replaced the leaf springs.
The rear is a little more than an inch high as a result so I'll have to get
one of those lowering kits from Moss. The rack, supposedly like "new" when
I got it from Ebay was clean but the rubber gaiters were cracked so I had
to replace them. Steering was extremely tight so I added shims from my
other rack to just where it moved freely. Maybe I'll try another thin shim
and see what it does. My book was a bit sketchy on determining just exactly
what point of looseness I wanted with the shims. Any tips on that too would
be appreciated. Shims I have.
