Now THAT I can believe. I have seen this in other sources. I was just
complaining about illogical geographic disparities -- the price of gas in
the US is certainly low by world standards, and when social costs are
considered, as described.

Some would disagree, I suppose, like the raving loony whose letter was
published in Classic Motorsport this month...
