and it has an attractive sweet smell which animals like.

A vet once told me that if your pet ingests ethylene glycol-based 
antifreeze to immediately feed them a shot or two of hard liquor
(ethyl alcohol) and get them to the vet ASAP.   The alcohol slows
the metabolization of the ethylene glycol in the liver.   This
process is what creates the toxins that cause kidney failure and
eventual death.  The booze carries its own risks, but it buys some
time to get the pet treated properly.
